Public Information Officers Communicators Committee

Among the many professionals working behind the scenes at campuses across the country are communications experts who help craft messages and tell stories that inform students and the community of the opportunities available and ongoing campus life. They often work with local, regional and national – and many times international – news media to deliver stories as well as address issues and crises that arise from time to time.

Featured here are the representatives from the communications offices of our member institutions. These representatives make up our CVHEC Public Information Officers/Communicators Committee. Committee members work collaboratively in developing and advancing a unified voice for the board regarding CVHEC initiatives and the general promotion of higher education in the Central Valley. The committee is charged with developing and advancing messages/campaigns on a regional, statewide and national basis depicting the positive nature of Central Valley colleges and universities and reinforcing the promotion of individual members’ messaging campaigns.

The PIO/Communicators Committee is chaired by Tom Uribes, CVHEC Communications/Media coordinator, whose 30-year career at Fresno State included two decades as the university’s public information officer until his retirement as a California State University public affairs specialist in 2017. He was honored as a Media, Communications and Journalism Fellow at the Fresno State Department of Media, Communications and Journalism Hall of Fame Reception in 2017 and the University’s Bold Visionary Award at the Chicano/Latino Commencement Celebration in 2019. Uribes joined CVHEC in 2020 and in addition to the PIO/Communicators Committee he coordinates media strategies and projects and serves as the CVHEC e-newsletter editor.
