DREAMSCAPE: Merced College breaking new ground with
first community college virtual reality lab in the state
A little journey into an immersive alien landscape at Merced College’s new Dreamscape Learn Lab that is now in use to aid in learning the basics of biology provided Central Valley Higher Education Consortium team members a break from their usual routines recently.
President Chris Vitelli extended an invite to Dr. Benjamín Durán, CVHEC executive director, for an exclusive tour Feb. 28 of the first permanent, brick-and-mortar virtual reality learning facility in the California Community College system to deploy both a Dreamscape Learn classroom and a free-roam pod experience.
Joining Dr. Duran on the VR trek were Ángel Ramírez, Elaine Cash, Tom Uribes and Priscilla Arellano.
Developed in partnership with Dreamscape Learn and in collaboration with Arizona State University, the immersive virtual reality learning lab was unveiled last summer with its first biology classes in the fall semester. Course offerings in other subjects will be expanded as curriculum is developed in the coming semesters. Dreamscape and ASU are currently developing storylines for introductory curricula for chemistry and art history, which everyone hopes will be available for Fall 2025.
The innovative educational platform integrates virtual reality (VR) and immersive storytelling techniques to create a highly engaging and interactive learning environment. The platform aims to transform traditional education by leveraging the power of VR to make complex subjects more accessible and captivating.
Students can explore virtual worlds, interact with dynamic simulations, and engage in experiential learning that enhances understanding and retention. Dreamscape Learn is designed to complement conventional teaching methods, providing a multi-sensory experience that fosters deeper learning and critical thinking skills.
“Now that we’ve launched, it’s so cool to see the level of engagement from everyone on campus, and the community outreach we’ve been able to do. It’s been phenomenal. Leaders all over the state want to visit. We’re trying to provide as much access as we can so people can experience the potential of it.” Merced College Dean of Innovation Garrick Grace said.
