John Spevak

Northern Regional Coordinator & English Task Force Liasion 



John Spevak, a former Merced College vice president, is CVHEC’s northern regional coordinator who works with six CVHEC member institutions from Stockton to Merced.

He has also coordinated the CVHEC English Task Force and the Merced Intersegmental Team (MIT), as well as helped the consortium support dual enrollment opportunities for faculty and students, including serving as a mentorship coordinator for CVHEC’s Dual Enrollment Upskilling Teachers Master’s Program in English and Math.

John is a former chief instructional officer with 23 years of experience as an instructional administrator at Merced College — seven as dean of the Los Banos Campus and 16 as vice president of instruction. He also served for 14 years as a full-time English instructor and academic advisor at the Los Banos Campus, during which he was an active member of the Merced College Faculty Senate.

John earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago. He has taught in the doctoral program in Educational Leadership at California State University, Stanislaus and has also served as an educational consultant to community colleges since 2008.
